Ayasofya: the mosque-turned-museum at the heart of an ideological battle

Turkey’s decision to secularise the building was symbolic – so is Erdoğan’s support for reversing it

For 900 years, Muslim caliphs and sultans took it upon themselves to fulfil the Prophet Mohammed’s prophecy that a great conqueror would one day bring the holy city of Constantinople into Islam’s embrace.

In 1453, when Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II finally succeeded in breaking through the Byzantine city’s walls, he immediately made his way to the largest cathedral in Christendom. Muhammad Anwar obituary

Race relations researcher who saw political involvement as a key factor in integration for immigrants to Britain

Muhammad Anwar, who has died aged 75 of a heart condition, did much to advance understanding of the problems and opportunities of ethnic minorities in Britain in the half century following his arrival in 1970 as a graduate student from Pakistan. In particular, he looked to involvement in democratic politics as a key factor in improving race relations.

In 1976 he published a book, Between Two Cultures, on Pakistani migrants to the UK. At the time, he noted, “racism and discrimination were rife, and participation in the political process was very low”.

Reports Melbourne coronavirus cluster originated at Eid party could stoke Islamophobia, say Muslim leaders

Media reports are ‘unfairly stigmatising the Muslim community’, says vice president of Islamic Council of Victoria

Muslim community leaders say they are terrified that unconfirmed news reports claiming one on Melbourne’s coronavirus clusters originated at a family Eid celebration could create a new wave of anti-Islamic sentiment.

“I’m really concerned, I’m thinking ‘here we go again’, scapegoating, marginalising, unfairly stigmatising the Muslim community,” said Adel Salman, the vice president of the Islamic Council of Victoria.

Delhi police accused of filing false charges over February riots

Democracy campaigners say officers ignored violence by Hindus during clashes with Muslims

Delhi police have been accused of filing false and politically motivated charges against pro-democracy activists to blame them for the Delhi riots – while not arresting any ruling party figures and police officers for their role in the violence.

More than 80 charge sheets have been filed naming those allegedly responsible for inciting the riots, which broke out in February in some of the worst religious violence in India for decades.

'I have more followers than the C of E’: meet the religious stars of Instagram

From the priest who runs Spinning classes to the vegan preacher, how are they spreading the gospel on social media? Interviews by Deborah Linton

In 2015, my friends invited me to do a slot called Rev Chris Reacts on their YouTube channels. I appeared in my dog-collar, reviewing food, culture and music; one video of me watching Ariana Grande’s God Is A Woman has now racked up over 8m views.

Good work! But I think you can it more beautiful if you want. Here you have written surah fatiha only in English. You can write it in a table in such a way that put Surah fatiha in arabic on one side and the translation of surah fatiha on the other side. That's my suggestion.

Campaigners fear far-right 'defence' of statues such as Churchill's

Tommy Robinson among supporters of ‘defend our memorials’ event

Busloads of far-right demonstrators are feared to be planning to travel hundreds of miles to “defend” memorials at the weekend, campaigners have said.

There are concerns that hundreds are mobilising to attend a “patriotic unity” event at Winston Churchill’s statue in Westminster on Saturday morning, in response to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests.

Religious leaders split over reopening places of worship in England

Christians welcome move, but Muslims and Jews stress role of communal prayer

Christian leaders have welcomed the government’s announcement that places of worship in England will be allowed to reopen for individual prayer from 15 June, but Muslim and Jewish leaders said the move was not appropriate for the way they practise their faith.

The decision, confirmed on Sunday by the communities secretary, Robert Jenrick, followed growing pressure on the government, particularly from the Catholic church. Most mosques, synagogues and temples, however, are likely to remain shut until communal prayer is permitted.
