Advice for a gay Muslim

Hi everyone,

OK - if you’ve not guessed - I’m a gay man. I’m aware that some scholars say that it’s acceptable for me, as a gay person, to be a Muslim, provided I’m celibate. That’s more-or-less the distinction made by Christians also.

However, surely there are practical difficulties in a celibate gay man becoming Muslim. For example, I couldn’t pray with the women, but I’d also face temptation if I prayed with the men.

Would I, for example, be allowed to shake the hand of another man?

It seems that gender is such an important determiner in Islam, and so gay people, of either gender, are fundamentally excluded. Does that mean I’m beyond forgiveness?

Any thoughts on this? I’ve had a rough week, so if you could all be civil and calm with me I’d appreciate it.

Thanks. :)
