Abdullah ibn Utbah reported: I heard Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, say, “Verily, in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the people would be judged by revelation, but the revelation has ended. Now we judge you according to your outward deeds. Whoever shows us good, we will trust him and favor him and it is not for us to judge his inner secrets, for Allah will hold him accountable for those. Whoever shows us evil, then we will not trust him or believe in him even if he claims his intention is good.” Source: Sahih Bukhari 2498 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Bukhari
Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab (ra) on Advice
Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab said:
لا خير في قوم ليسوا بناصحين ولا خير في قوم لا يحبون الناصحين
English: “There is no goodness in people who don’t give advice, and there is no goodness in people who don’t like to be advised.”
["Risaalat Al-Mustarshideen", 71].
Imām Ibn 'Abdil Barr al-Andalusī (رحمه الله) said:
وقد أجمعوا أن أحكام الدنيا على الظاهر وأن السرائر الى الله عز وجل
"They have unanimously agreed that the rulings in the dunyā are judged by the apparent, and that the secrets (within the heart) are left to Allāh, the Exalted and Majestic."
📚 — [At-Tamhīd (10/185)]
Imām Ibn Battāl (رحمه الله) said:
وقد أجمعوا أن أحكام الدين على الظاهر، والى الله السرائر
"They have unanimously agreed that the rulings of the dīn are judged by the apparent, and the secrets are left to Allāh".
📚 — [Sharh Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī" (16/122)]
Imām al-Qurṭubī (رحمه الله) said:
"The scholars have unanimously agreed that the rulings in the dunyā are judged by the apparent, and that the secrets (within the heart) are left to Allāh, the exalted and majestic."
📚 — [Al-Jāmi' Li-Ahkām al-Qur'ān (12/203)]
Al-Hāfidh Ibn Ḥajar al-'Asqalānī (رحمه الله) said:
وكلهم أجمعوا على أن أحكام الدنيا على الظاهر والله يتولى السرائر وقد قال ﷺ لأسامة: "هلا شققت عن قلبه"
"They have all unanimously agreed that the rulings in the dunyā are judged by the apparent, and Allāh takes care of the secrets. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Usāmah: Did you open up his heart?"
📚 — [Fath al-Bārī (12/273)]
There is nothing left after all this, except distortion and misguidance of those who take the path of the Murji'ah and Jahmiyyah.
Surah 24 an-noor(The Light) 39) But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account.
Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] - never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path. (Qur'an) [Surah Nisa 4:168]
Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allah, is [always] easy. (Qur'an) [Surah Nisa 4:169]
But [I have for you] only notification from Allah, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever. (Qur'an) [Surah Jinn 72:23]
