What we know about the Omar Mateen case, so far:
Motive: After the atrocious massacre at Pulse nightclub, the grievances cited by Omar Mateen about US aggression were ignored in favor of the narrative that he was a closeted gay man who targeted LGBTs, whom he hated due to Islam. It is now clear that these media claims were completely false. starting with 9/11, the US media works hard to suppress the grievances which terrorists cite when attacking the US (almost always: "you're killing innocent Muslim kids with your bombs"). Omar Mateen wasn't gay and the FBI, despite searching endlessly, has never found any evidence that he ever sought or had sex with men or ever went to any gay bars before, including Pulse.
Here, by inventing the false narrative that Omar Mateen was a self-hating gay man targeting LGBTs, those false stories completely drowned his actual, stated motives for his evil attack on Pulse: "Because you have to tell America to stop bombing Syria and Iraq. They are killing a lot of innocent people,” he said during his first call to 911. “What am I to do here when my people are getting killed over there…You need to stop the U.S. air strikes. They need to stop the U.S. air strikes, okay? This went down, a lot of innocent women and children are getting killed in Syria and Iraq and Afghanistan, okay? The air strikes need to stop and stop collaborating with Russia. Okay?”
The Trial of Omar Mateen’s Wife, Noor Salman: On March 22, in a federal court in Orlando, the very odd prosecution of Omar Mateen's wife all but fell apart, as the judge discovered he had been repeatedly misled about key evidence by DOJ prosecutors.
Seddique Mateen, Omar’s father, worked with the FBI as an informant for 11 years (2005-16) and himself was under investigation for sending money to Afghanistan and Turkey. Noor Salman's lawyers say the FBI hid these key facts until now out of embarrassment: it was due to FBI's close relationship with Mateen's father that they didn't arrest Mateen when they investigated him in 2013. Also, the prosecution of Noor Salman intended to protect real accomplice: FBI's asset.
FBI agent testified that the only reason one of the reasons he followed up with Omar Mateen after the first interview was because he considered turning Omar Mateen into an informant, like his father.
Media Coverage: Among other things, this case illustrates how often, and how easily, news outlets spread falsehoods by uncritically publishing unverified claims from anonymous "law enforcement officials" (i.e. the FBI).
