Hi,
Introduction first. I am a Hindu from India, not the extremist type that are currently ruling. I am mostly a liberal.
Now I have a basic question, but let me preface it properly. I know almost all of the world religions which have laws prescribe taking the lives of human beings under certain violations. My own religion has a law book which prescribed killing of lower caste people for reading Vedas. Similarly, the Sharia has a number of cases prescribing killing.
Now, being a liberal, I consider it one of the big achievements of humanity in the past few centuries to place a high premium on human life and not take it for small matters and never without due process.
This brings me to the present status of Islamic law. Is prescribing death necessary for things like adultery, leaving Islam and even criticism of Islam?
I ask it because I think that taking a life should require a much higher standard.
