I'd greatly appreciate a response from a scholar or somebody acquainted with the history of the origins of Islam.
A question I was asked from a non-muslim and struggled to answer - he was reading Reza Aslan's book 'No God but God' on the history and origins of Islam, in which it describes that the pagan Arabs used to circle the Kaaba 7 times before the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, as a form of worship toward the idols that they stored inside the Kaaba. Why then, as Muslims, are we also required to perform Tawaf - why was this tradition carried across when Islam was formed?
