I am writing a novel - how can I depict muslim prayer accurately and respectfully?

Hello,

I am writing a novel with a muslim character and I have a couple of questions which I hope you can help with.

1) How should I depict a muslim praying to God for help? For example, a family member is sick and you want to pray for them, how would that happen? Would it be part of the daily Salat, or is this prayer something that would be done separately/without the ritual?

2) At one point the character attends the opening ceremony for a mosque. If the ceremony were for a christian church it would be normal for a pastor to give some kind of speech, then lead a group prayer during which the pastor might give thanks to God and ask him to bless the new church.

What would the islamic equivalent of this ceremony be? Would an imam also give a speech and lead some kind of prayer of thanks and blessing for the mosque?
