TIL Many Black Muslims were exempt from Jim Crow discrimination because Islam was seen as a white identity

Sapelo Square is an American blog that writes primarily about Black Muslim issues. This article, which is about the influence of Islam among African-American jazz musicians, mentions that Black Muslims in the 1940's and 50's were often accepted as white by all-white restaurants and businesses in the south!

It's so surprising to me that, in an age associated with segregation and prejudice, Islam was actually a path to acceptance from white America.

Also, if you read the article from Ebony included in the article, the jazz musician they interviewed about these things had similar views on race and Islam to post-Hajj Malcolm X. Neat stuff.
