Why is "peace be upon him" only said when referring to Mohammad instead of everyone who has passed on?

Seems like a phrase one would use for every person or every Muslim that has passed on akin to "God rest his soul" or "may he rest in peace" said in Christianity about anyone who has passed. However, I have only heard it used when referring to Mohammad. There is only one reason I can think of off the top of my head is that it is a phrase in Arabic or ancient Arabic that does not directly translate to English with "peace be upon him" being the closest and shortest approximation.

Is there a reason that particular phrase is used only for Mohammad?
