Question about Shia Islam: 12th Imam and Ali

Although a year in, I’m still visiting various Islamic (or Muslim – I don’t know what the correct adjective is) communities. I’ve visited Sunni and Ahmadi. Sunnis are a bit more exclusive. I've visited masjids and attended halaqas, but no real person to person discussions. I was hoping I’d get more answers about Islam that I have and gain more knowledge and support, but that hasn’t happened. I stopped exploring maybe 9 month in and picked it up again.

I visited a Shia community and met with one of their members who volunteered to answer questions and share his story, although he began by saying, “I’m not an expert.”

His faith path was very moving. He gave the standard, “Islam is true because what it teaches makes me a better person,” but he told me some other facts that I’m hoping this board can clarifying:

THE SUCCESSOR TO ISLAM IS ALI He said that the Quran shows that Ali was going to be the natural successor for Islam and said Surah 5:55 demonstrates this. Are there any other clues or indicators of that?

THE 12TH IMAM He said that the 12th Imam is still alive. The last 11 died of natural deaths and number of years. So this 12th imam, who will be here until the world ends, is still living and reaching a similar age of Noah, around 900 years.

He also said the 12th imam is in contact with other ayatollahs?

Is this true?
