Hello there, happy Ramadan and I hope you're having a good day. A few days ago I posted here (https://www.reddit.com/r/islam/comments/8j8qrt/im_a_non_muslim_and_im_about_to_start_reading_the/) explaining that I had been gifted a translated version of the Quran and was about to start reading it. A few people asked me to post an update as I went. If this isn't appropriate or worse, boring, let me know and I'll stop at this post.
Tonight I finally found the time to sit down and begin reading properly. I attempted to take to heart the various suggestions that had been given me, clearing my mind, asking Allah to guide me ect. (Note that I am unsure if there is a technique for such a request, I drew on my previous experience with religion, I would love to know if there was some ritual or step that I missed.) Then I began reading slowly and methodically, from the "beginning", taking notes at passages that interested me. My Muslim friend was online and we had some conversations as I was reading which I think enhanced the experience. Then again I may just enjoy her company.
Around half way through I stopped and went out exercising, normally I would listen to a podcast but as per the suggestion of many of you I instead listened to a recitation of what I believe was passages I read. Overall I found this experience to be similar to listening to music, enjoyable but purely on an aesthetic level. I found that since I didn't understand the words my mind wandered to innocuous and mundane things, I'm not sure if I will do that again.
After I returned I read for a little longer, so far I am only 20 pages in but already the Quran has touched on many topics.
My only questions for you thus far is should I continue posting here? And also if it is not too much trouble, help me understand the following words.
Zakat
Qiblah
Safa
Marwah
