Verse 2:26 answered an extremely important question I’ve had for a long time.

TRANSLATION : Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient, [Translation source: Islam 360]

For the longest time, I’ve heard many people say “Allah guides whom He wills, and leads astray whom He wills.”

The question that always plagued me was, “what if someone would have otherwise been accepting of Islam, but Allah misguided them?” and “what is the point of da’wah if it’s up to Allah who is guided and who isn’t?”

I came across this ayat today, and it answered those questions. Allah doesn’t blindly guide and misguide, He is omniscient and is methodical. So when He se says “He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby.” He also says “And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,”

Reading that made the whole dilemma make much more sense. It’s not just sheer luck that may lead you astray, it’s your character. So, when Allah says “defiantly disobedient” He means people like Abu Jahl and Abu Lahab.

I thought I’d share this useful tidbit, in case anyone here had the same confusion I had. There’s obviously more verses and Hadith pertaining to this, it’s just this one that truly helped me understand.
