As-salaamu alaykum brothers and sisters,
One thing I've thought about a lot lately is that there are a lot of Muslim-majority nations that are not in the public or Muslim's public consciousness as much as other "famous" Muslim nations, like Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, etc. These "other" countries are not discussed much in the media, on Reddit, or amongst the Muslims that I know. Maybe it is because I am just ignorant. These include some of the following states:
- Some of the states in North Africa, such as Tunisia or Morocco, Western Sahara, etc.
- Many of the sub-Saharan African states, including Sudan, Mauritania, Mali, Nigeria (population is 100M, larger than Egypt, Turkey, and Iran), Niger, Senegal, etc.
- Central Asian Republics, such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, etc.
- Azerbaijan
- Bangladesh (contains 150M Muslims)
- India (contains 190M, almost as much as Pakistan) - Of course India is a well-known country and is constantly in the media; however, I feel the fact it has such a large Muslim population is not widely known
- Southeast Asia, including Indonesia (has the highest population of Muslim majority countries and I almost never hear of it in the media, except for the 2004 tsunami), Malaysia, Singapore
- Albania
- Bosnia
- Russia - has an estimated 10M to 20M muslims, comprising between 7 and 15% of the entire population.
These represent a huge number of the Muslims in the umma. Personally, I am really interested to learn more about many of these countries, particularly the African nations since I know very few brothers and sisters from these regions. If you are from any of these regions, or you've traveled to any of them, I'd love to hear about more about the country. What's a famous place or prominent city in the country? What's something unique about the country or culture? What are some of the interesting aspects about Muslims in those countries?
JazakAllahu kheir.
