Did the prophet discourage against making big/long-term plans?

I went with my wife to see the imam at our mosque. The context of this meeting was to resolve certain differences between my wife and I. One of these is that I prefer to be more cautious and plan things out, especially when they are related to money and travel. My wife is younger and believes that we should enjoy our life now - The imam chimed in on this and encouraged us to not think too much about the future, but one thing did not exactly make sense to me: He said that the prophet discouraged big/elaborate plans. I've never really heard this being said about the prophet. I understand that from a "general advice" perspective, one might tell someone to be thankful for what you have, ,etc. but is there a specific example on what the imam said? Please advise.
