And the imam gave a short talk about how, if we understand the seerah, days like this (punish a Muslim day) are supposed to actually increase our iman. That's what it did to the sahaba, according to my imam. I mean really, if you can't stamp out Islam through logical discourse, but you have to use violence and ad hominens and what not... that says something ;)
Moreover the imam said that days like this raise awareness for Islam - more people end up reading into it and taking shahada.
It's the 3rd shahada there that I witnessed in the past ~3 weeks. The brother was a Christian and apparently was coming to the masjid every now and then and buying books at the bookstore, studying Islam, and eventually testified that yep, this is haqq.
