What are the Islamic rulings on using physical torture to interrogate an individual?

I know that Islamic prescribes certain rules for war. Does it have any rules regarding how prisoners of war/suspects should be treated. Does it allow the use of torture to interrogate an individual to get sensitive information? Would be interested in knowing from either Sunni or Shia perspectives.
