Javed Ahmed Ghamidi's advice for dealing with depression

In a recent meeting with some of his students, Ghamidi Sahib mentioned the following three measures which if adopted will help an individual not get into a depression mode:

  1. Be absolutely clear that this life is a trial only, nothing more and nothing less. You have very little role in what's happening around you. God is running the show. Even though you must try to improve your conditions, the fact is that He is the one who eventually decides. Adjust yourself to this reality.

  2. Be thankful to God for even the little things you have been privileged to have in life. Quite often we ignore the fact that we are immensely blessed with lots of good things, big and small, but we don't properly acknowledge them. As a result, our minds get stuck in the irritants we face in life that cause us to be depressed.

  3. Develop an attitude of becoming a giver who doesn't expect anything from others. It's expectations from others that make you feel dejected when they're not fulfilled. So give to others - - wealth, time, emotions, service etc - - without expecting anything from them. Enjoy giving and forget the possibility of receiving anything from others. Whatever, you get from them should be counted as a bonus, not a return you deserved.
