Unless you're ok with eating worms and other little critters please open your date and check. The usual bugs look like little brown or black dots. There are also relatively large white worms that you can sometimes find.
Also this is usually the case in masjid dates during iftaar, don't know why. Just seeing all these people pop the whole thing into their mouth unknowingly while I simultaneously find a nasty little surprise in mine kind of disgusts me.
