We know that food and drink break the fast. But what about the use of an inhaler or an IV?
In this video, Shaykh Rami Nsour discussed the more nuanced questions we have about what breaks the fast. For example, we might be taking medication, need an IV, or an emergency inhaler. Do those things break the fast?
He mentions that most scholars say that substances that reach the bloodstream rather than the stomach, do not break the fast. Therefore, taking an IV drip does not break the fast. However, medicines that reach the stomach through swallowing, do break the fast. If you are unable to rearrange taking the medications around the fasting day, then you are not required to fast. If this is the case, you should not feel bad or prevent yourself from taking vital medications, because Ramadan is more than just the fasting. Shaykh Rami suggests some things you can do to gain the benefit of these blessed days.
