Are the 'religion police' something from Islam?

I remember a story in which Saiyidina Umar went into a man's house and found him to be drinking. However the man said that even though he committed one wrong, Umar had done 3; he intruded a man's home, looked for faults in him, and thought badly of him( Su'u al-dzan). (Correct me if any of this is wrong please)

So my question is, the religious bodies that go around knocking on doors sometimes even breaking them, or going around clubs to find Muslims who drink and fornicate, does all this really align with the spirit of Islam? Is it even permissable to do these things?

I thought we are supposed to mind our own business. Unless of course, we're in a situation where we see a person clearly drinking in public or something like that.
