Alcohol culture in the west is kinda depressing

I've been studying with a group of my classmates for almost more than a year now and despite my Muslim upbringing, I still feel close to them. They always respected my beliefs and I respected theirs. But when it comes to social outings, it feels like they are incapable of having fun without alcohol. They would rather spend some with a beverage than have my company. That still blows my mind. How can you have such an emotional attachment to a drink?
