Hey Everyone :)
I'm considering buying a Quran one of these days to broaden my knowledge of Islam. However, when I read books for study purposes, I usually underline a lot of things, highlight some, and write notes in the margin. I'm more familiar with Christianity, and when it comes to Bible study, most Christians actually encourage this kind of studying if it allows you to better understand and interact with the text. They even bring out all sorts of special Bible editions with annotations and whatnot. I was wondering how this practice is looked upon in the Islamic community. I have found some message boards on the subject but got mixed signals from those boards. Furthermore, I wasn't sure if the people who argued against taking notes did that because of personal preference or because of a general rule or something.
I'm not a Muslim myself, but I see no point in being disrespectful if the act of writing in the Quran is generally frowned upon. So I was interested in your opinions on the subject. And secondly, if you advise against taking notes in the Quran, I was wondering what you do instead. Do you keep a separate notebook beside it, or do you have other ways of studying?
