[Non-Muslim] Purely from a theological perspective, does the Sunni/Shia divide still have theological significance?

I apologize if this seems like a stupid question. I'm actually agnostic, and this is a question I couldn't readily find an answer for. Anyway, my understanding is that the Sunni/Shia split began with the clash over who was Muhammad's rightful successor and the legitimate Caliph. Sunni's side with Abu Bakr and his immediate successors, while Shiites think it should have been Ali. Today though, there is no caliphate at all. The last widely recognized caliph was the Ottoman Emperor, and even the self-proclaimed "Caliphate" of DAESH has been all but destroyed. With this in mind, is the Sunni/Shia divide still theologically meaningful? Or is the divide really more a matter of politics and culture?
