You can say that I am closet ex-Muslim. I am pressured and shamed to fast and pray during Ramadan. For me, every Ramadan is like living in hell. I have to hide and eat food and have to drink water in the bathroom. My family is mad at me for not praying 3 hours of taraweeh and it created a divide between me and my family. I go through huge mental exhaustion every Ramadan from lying and pretending. Here is my issue. It is wrong to pressure, shame and force others to follow religious beliefs and rituals. People should have right to consciously think and make their mind up about religion. They should have free will to follow rituals. I know most Muslims including Muslims in my family will say Islam allows freedom of religion and Muslims should not pressure, shame or force others to follow the Islamic rituals. However, I find these are only talking points. Not only they don't stop others from pressuring, they themselves pressure and shame others to follow Islamic rituals. There should be more acceptance of not following rituals in Islamic community. I like to say Muslims are diverse people and these statements maybe true for my community but it may not be true for your community. If you think it is not true for your Muslim community, then ask yourself what would people think or do if you or someone else you knew openly did not fast or pray. I think Muslims should start a movement of accepting people who do not follow Islamic rituals. Let me know what you think.
