Is trying to understand the " controversial topics" of religion a bad thing?

Salam Aleykoum people. I am a soon to be 18 boy.

Over the past few months I've came to the realisation that I am a Muslim only because well I was born into this religion. What Im trying to do is that I want to be certain of what I'm believing in and during this process I sometimes have a little bit of doubts but as I read on an other old thread , some questions are the type of questions some people spend their hole lives pondering on. Most of my doubts come from topics like Slavery in Islam for example or other " controversial topics". On one hand I feel like trying to understand some of the " controversial" aspects of religion is doing me some harm as It puts me in cycles of doubt and thinking. But at the same time aren't we supposed to seek knowledge and develop critical thinking skills?

I did not mean to offend nobody with this , I am just trying to understand my religion better. Thank you
